In what could double as a Moms Demand Action press release, the ‘Annals of Internal Medicine’ have released an article, or “call to action,” on their website which outlines all of the old, tired, arguments for sweeping gun control legislation using their medical prowess and fancy degrees to spin the entire gun debate as a ‘public health issue.’ However, one, rather conspicuous statement, in what otherwise would be an antiquated argument from 1994, is worthy of pause.
In a section of the article entitled, “Physician ‘Gag Laws'”, the author(s) argue that the legal barriers set forth by various state laws inhibits the ability for physicians to “educate the public on the risks of firearm ownership.” The article continues,
“Patients trust their physicians to advise them on issues that affect their health, and physicians can answer questions and educate the public on the risks of firearm ownership and the need for firearm safety. Often, these confidential conversations occur during regular examinations and are a natural part of the patient–physician relationship.”
I’m not a particularly sickly, or injury-prone person and try to avoid doctors at all costs, however, in my limited dealings with health professionals, the topic of firearms is not brought up ‘often’ and would not be considered a ‘natural’ part of my patient-physician relationship. The article cites various state laws which prohibit certain information from being discussed in a doctor patient relationship, most notably, firearm ownership [Firearm Owners’ Privacy Act, Florida 2011]. They claim that the law ‘impaired physicians ability to deliver gun-safety messages to patients.’
Ah yes, ‘gun safety,’ a term perverted by Michael Bloomberg and his minions over at Every Town for Gun Safety and his loyal disciples over at Moms Demand Action who are big fans of exploiting victims of gun control to further disarm America. I have a sneaking suspicion that these M.D.s aren’t particularly concerned with teaching patients about the dangers of muzzle sweeps, or the importance of knowing your target and what is beyond it, or to always keep your finger straight and off the trigger. In fact, I would be surprised if any of these ‘decorated’ medical professionals know the difference between a clip and magazine, let alone be equipped to give ‘gun safety’ advice to their patients.
In not so many words the author(s) give away their true motives for their stance against laws such as the Firearm Owners Privacy Act.
When appropriate, physicians can intervene with patients who are at risk for injuring themselves or others due to firearm access. To do so, physicians must be allowed to speak freely to their patients in a nonjudgmental manner about firearms, provide patients with factual information about firearms relevant to their health and the health of those around them, fully answer their patients’ questions, and advise them on the course of behaviors that promote health and safety without fear of liability or penalty. Physicians must also be able to document these conversations in the medical record as they are able and required to do with discussion of other behaviors that can affect health.
Excuse me for being disturbed that 8 national health professional organizations and the American Bar Association would sign on to make gun control a ‘public health’ issue in the midst of the largest takeover of the entire healthcare vertical in U.S. history. And forgive me for being incredibly suspicious of anyone wanting to document private gun ownership in medical records which are now federally mandated to be stored digitally by the monstrosity that is the Affordable Care Act. Fresh off failed attempts to expand federal background checks for private gun sales through legal means, it now appears that the Feds are using their lackeys in the medical industry to advocate for back door gun registration via medical records.
So, if you ever get infected with a bad case of constitutionalism, libertarianism, or even anarchism, think twice before disclosing your firearm collection to your local physician. If you do, they might send someone like the guy in the video below to rid you of your ‘public health issue.’
