LA CROSSE WI  – At approximately 1:50 am on February 3rd, 24 year old Heidi Thompson entered the Kings Korner bar in La Crosse, Wisconsin carrying a .22 caliber pistol in her hand, and a ski mask covering her face.  She stood in front of the bar and demanded cash from the bar tender and instructed the rest of the crowd to put their hands on their heads.  Initial reports of the incident mentioned that one bar patron rushed Thompson with a stun gun but was ineffective and she eventually left with an undisclosed amount of cash.  That brave bar patron is Jeff Steele, and he is now facing felony charges for possessing an electronic weapon without obtaining a concealed carry permit.

According to Officer Lisa Barrix of the La Crosse Police Department, “You can have it in your home and on your private property without a concealed carry permit, but you do need to keep a concealed carry permit to carry it out in public.”

“When I bought it off the Internet it said basically that it’s legal to have in the state of Wisconsin, but didn’t go into any depth on it, so I assumed that it was legal to carry around, otherwise why would you buy one to leave it at home? How is it for defense then?” Steele said.

The decision now rests with the district attorney’s office as to whether or not they charges will be pursued.

This is textbook example of a government infringing on ones right to defend their life.  Apparently the State of Wisconsin, among others (Texas), requires one to pay the government in order to defend their life in public.  It is not hard to conclude that the laws limiting the ability for law abiding citizens to defend themselves is actually giving the criminal elements of society an advantage.
